THE LIMEWORKS
OUTDOOR SCULPTURE GALLERY
15th of October 2023
We started building ‘The Outdoor Gallery’ at The Limeworks in 2020. I had worked in London warehouse studios for over fourty years. Most of my sculptures were made indoors and exhibited in galleries.
On moving to The Limeworks in 2016 we were surrounded for the first time by land and outside space. My sculptures changed as a result and I started to work partly outside with many works sited in the landscape. Alongside this I wanted to see works in a more architectural environment but without roof or ceiling and with a strong relationship to each other.
I started with a walled concrete ‘bunker’ a room with irregular wall heights and with a strong connection to the landscape outside. This moved on to cutting levels and creating slabs of concrete with steps and walkways between. No drawings were made and very little planning but with an emphasis on developing the space as a reaction to how it felt and looked. There was no end point at this time but just cutting into the hill and adding more slabs. The angles of slabs, heights of retaining walls and position of steps were decided in the making.
